Cerebral palsy cannot actually be cured, but various treatments and therapies can significantly improve the impairment, pain, and other problems caused by the condition. Effective treatment normally means working with a team of experts in a combination of therapies.

Hyperbaric therapy
Hyperbaric therapy delivers high levels of oxygen to the brain and other tissues in the body. It is most effective when used immediately after brain injury is discovered. Many doctors and medical experts doubt that hyperbaric therapy actually works, but parents and patients claim that it is very effective.

Botox
Hollywood has made BOTOX famous for its cosmetic applications, so many people are not aware that it can be used to treat medical problems involving the muscles. It works by paralyzing or relaxing specific targeted muscles. In the face, this smoothes wrinkles caused by repetitive facial expressions. In cerebral palsy patients it stops muscle spasms, relieving pain and giving patients more control over their movements.

Therapeutic electric stimulation (TES)
TES is electrically stimulates the muscles. It is used during sleep to increase muscle fiber. TES is normally used in conjunction with physical therapy or exercise.

Hippotherapy
Horseback riding for therapeutic purposes is called hippotherapy. It works for physical, emotional, and psychological impairments. The actual movement of the horse gently stimulates the body while riding, and the act of riding helps the child learn to control his or her movements. Both children and adults, who are severely impaired, will often respond to animals when they will not respond to other people, making animal therapies the breakthrough step in therapy and rehabilitation. Hippotherapy builds self-confidence, reduces isolation, and can alleviate depression.

Physical and occupational therapy
Physical and occupational therapy keep the muscles in good condition. Stretching and working the muscles, in physical therapy, helps cerebral palsy patients regulate and balance muscle tone so that they can achieve the highest control and fluidity of movement possible. Occupational therapy focuses on improving motor skills and achieving everyday tasks.

Speech therapy

Impaired speech is a common and serious problem for children and adults with CP. Even when cognitive function is not impaired, difficulty communicating can create a severe hindrance, and reduce a child’s ability to achieve. Speech abilities can be improved by therapy, and other communication devices are available for those who cannot overcome or fully overcome CP induced speech impairment.

Exercise therapy
Exercise therapy is less focused than physical therapy, but helps to achieve some of the same goals, as well as increasing blood flow and oxygen to the brain and muscles. Swimming is a popular form of exercise therapy because it can accomplish this without putting great stress on the body. Many patients also benefit from exercise therapy by improving their self-confidence and reducing depression.

Massage therapy
Massage therapy relieves chronic pain by relaxing the constantly overstressed muscles. Over time the spacicity associated with cerebral palsy can radiate constant muscle tension throughout the body.

Surgery
Muscles and tendons can be surgically lengthened in some cases. Surgery can help cerebral palsy patients who have extreme contractures which do not respond to other, less invasive therapies.
